About Education Programs at the Steel Yard:The Steel Yard’s Open Enrollment Courses foster a safe and creative educational environment that acts as a vehicle for students to connect with the creative maker within themselves.  Classes are taught by professional craftspeople and artists, who facilitate a creative curriculum that instills students with practical skills that can be used in an artistic and/or functional way.

Open Enrollment courses serve a diverse group of students and community members as they experience welding, blacksmithing, jewelry, ceramics, and iron casting. Open Enrollment classes fulfil the Steel Yard’s mission by providing access to tools and studio space, while generating income, and cultivating and maintaining relationships with students. Similarly, Teambuilding Workshops are available to corporate and private parties who want to use the Steel Yard’s studios to experience the industrial arts for a limited engagement.

Course Coordinator Role and Responsibilities: The Course Coordinator is a key member of the Steel Yard staff, they must be enthusiastic and creative in course development and enrollment growth. They are expected to analyze information related to courses, enrollment trends, marketing, and student and instructor feedback. The Course Coordinator will consider developing new courses or modifying existing courses to reflect feedback from instructors and students. 
The Course Coordinator also oversees the management and implementation of Teambuilding Workshops and is responsible for ensuring that the participants’ expectations are met while providing a safe and engaging curriculum that is reflective of the Steel Yards standards.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Leads the development of educational programming including open enrollment courses and associated studio access, as well as Teambuilding Workshops. 
  • Is innovative in course development and aware of industry trends
  • Maintains current excellence in programming, while growing and expanding studio access
  • Is concerned with student development and needs is dedicated to expanding community access to studio resources
  • Manages Educational Scholarship application process, facilitates the review of applications, and tracks yearly scholarship gifting
  • Cultivates relationships with new instructors as well as retaining relationships with veteran instructors
  • Recruit, hire, and manage instructors and teaching assistants, including engaging successful job training graduates
  • Works with instructors to define their courses and establish budgets for each class
  • Manages course registrations, course cancellations, and acts as the primary contact for students, teachers, and clients
  • Is responsible for the marketing of educational opportunities, and for the coordination of additional materials with the Communications Manager
  • Works with studio staff to ensure that course materials have been purchased in advance of classes, and the studios are appropriately prepared for courses
  • Contributes to the annual budget
  • Provides materials and support for grants directly related to courses, assists with grants management and reporting for grants directly related to educational programs
  • Administer proper paperwork for teachers and TA’s, maintain current and accurate records on all independent contractors 
  • Collaborate with other staff to train new teachers and teaching assistants on Steel Yard procedures and protocol
New Administrative/Management:
  • Grow single-night workshop offerings in each department
  • Cultivate relationships with new instructors, especially within the blacksmithing and welding departments
General Administrative:
  • Promote the Steel Yard’s mission
  • Regularly attend staff meetings, and occasional Board Meetings when requested
  • Participate in fundraising events and initiatives
  • Attend organizational planning meetings when requested by Executive DirectorReporting Structure
Reporting Structure
  • Reports to the Associate Director and, as requested, to the Executive Director
  • Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Previous experience facilitating educational programming
  • Demonstrated experience in non-profit or community work
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite software for print and digital applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Organized and detail oriented; is able to multi-task, manage time well and work under deadline
  • Ability to engage with diverse populations of program participants, program partners, and program funders
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience using Salesforce platform
  • Interest in becoming an active Steel Yard community member
  • Multi-Lingual
  • Knowledgeable and/or experience in the Steel Yard’s teaching departments
